  • Protect Yourself from Flu and Passing Germs

With the flu this year striking early, hard, and reaching epidemic strength, it’s important to be aware of how germs can spread far and wide through coughing.

  • Cough Daddy rules.  First video was good…second was hysterical!  Thanks for the chuckles and the great advice for flu season.

  • haha first time I heard we should cough on fabric.  Interesting and informative.  thanks for sharing.

  • great videos. but you forgot to mention its also important to get our flu shots. =)

  • “it’s the right thing, the polite thing to do.” haha

germ-o-phobe here appreciating all those who cough into their elbows!

  • @Soapie - YOU can get a shot, I’ll stay healthy without some chemical enhancement designed to do what our bodies already do without them.

  • @crankycaregiver - You’re very welcome!

@MichellelyNg - Yeah, not intuitive, but it makes sense. =)

  • @Soapie - Good point – that’s a very important line of defense!

@selfuniversity - Ha ha, yeah, it’s very disturbing to see someone sneeze or cough “open mouthed” in an enclosed area. They have no idea of the amount of contaminants being spread.

  • @saturnnights - The flu shot isn’t a chemical mix but rather bit of dead flu viruses that helps your body respond faster if attacked by the real deal. It’s a vaccine similar to what you get for polio or other virus infections. The flu virus changes every year which is why yearly flu shots are needed.

Sure, one can take the chance and go without, but the risk of serious complications or death increase for the very young and old – especially in years where it’s a nasty virulent strain such as this year.

  • @SoullFire - There is mercury in dead viruses?

  • @saturnnights - I’m sorry, I’m not sure what you are asking?

  • @SoullFire -
Mercury technically is a metal, so I misspoke, however there is a chemical mix. Here: http://www.livestrong.com/article/74011-chemicals-flu-vaccines/

  • @saturnnights - I see what you mean. The added chemicals aren’t part of the cure, but used for preservatives and sterilization. In that regard, most medicines have trace chemical additives. Your body may or may not be able to successfully defend against viral  infections, but the vaccine helps to increase the odds in you favor with an early warning recognition of similar viruses. We can be thankful we don’t have to deal with the past terrors like polio and small pox thanks to vaccines.

  • “The added chemicals aren’t part of the cure”

Precisely, and even small amounts, miniscule amounts of mercury are bad for you.  I don’t eat from peeling teflon, or drink from aluminum either.  Heavy metals are nothing you want in your body, or bloodstream.

  • @saturnnights - Like i said, most medicines have some toxic elements in trace amounts that are deemed harmless. What would be the alternative solution – forego all medication/ vaccinations to guard against a negligible risk as judged by the CDC while remaining exposed to the bigger risk since people are currently dying from flu exposure? I’m sure no one wants a deadly virus multiplying in their blood stream either.

Did you know there are also single use vaccine vials that don’t contain mercury, as its primary use is to prevent cross bacterial contamination from the multiple use vials?

  • @saturnnights - i did get a flu shot, thank you. for some people our bodies are healthy yes, but unfortunately that is not the case for everyone. and that is exactly why vaccines are so vital. vaccines will only work if everyone gets them. it’s called herd immunity. you can read about it here:      http://www.niaid.nih.gov/topics/pages/communityimmunity.aspx

because the vaccine is contained, then people who have higher risks of death related to a virus (for example, babies, the elderly, people with other comorbidities)  are protected against the virus because everyone around them doesn’t have the virus.

but if everyone starts to say, “oh i dont want to get vaccinated..” then viruses spread, affecting everyone. even if it doesn’t affect you, it can affect a family member, a coworker, a friend, your workplace, school, etc.
lets’s take pertussis, for example. babies are too young to get the pertussis vaccine, and this year there has been an increased occurrence in pertussis (aka whopping cough). in one case, a baby was infected with pertussis and when they traced the source, the origin was from the highschool of the older brother. (even though the  older brother did not get infected with pertussis, but he brought it home and infected the newborn). thus, vaccines are not only for your own protection against viruses, but also for the protection for others around you.
anyway i don’t want to get into a vaccine debate on soulfire’s xanga, but i encourage you to ask your doctor more about vaccines and their risks and benefits.

  • @Soapie -

My do@Soapie - ctor (I see about once in 2 years or so) would agree w/you, although he knows nothing about anything but mainstream medicine, not natural remedies, etc. I will look at that info, although I think it’s another bit of info propagated by pharm

  • oh man, we have this woman at work with a violent cough since Thanksgiving. She NEVER has water or cough drops to soothe her throat.  We nicknamed her “Ricola.”  HAHAHA…
